July 2026 — Saratoga County

Boil water advisory issued after Saratoga County Water Authority main break

A break on the Saratoga County Water Authority main line prompted the county Health Department to issue a boil water notice for parts of the Town of Ballston, including Eastline Road and nearby subdivisions, Round Lake Road, and Timber Creek. Residents in the affected area were told to bring tap water to a rolling boil for at least one minute (or use bottled water) until further notice — a standard precaution after a pressure loss that can let contamination into the system.

July 3, 2026 — Hudson River

Power failure at Yonkers plant sends ~39 million gallons of sewage into the Hudson

A power failure during an extreme-heat event knocked out the Yonkers sewage treatment plant — which handles wastewater for 22 lower-Westchester municipalities — releasing roughly 39 million gallons of partly treated sewage into the Hudson River. The New York State Departments of Health and Environmental Conservation, working with Westchester and Rockland Counties and New York City, issued a health advisory against swimming or full-body water contact along the Hudson from New York City up to Briarcliff Manor while sampling continued.

June 3, 2026 — Albany

New York Legislature passes bill locking PFAS drinking water limits into state law

The State Legislature passed the Drinking Water Standards for PFAS bill (S3207-B / A8634-B), which codifies enforceable maximum contaminant levels for PFAS into New York public health law — tracking the federal 2024 limits of 4 parts per trillion for PFOA and PFOS and 10 ppt for PFNA, PFHxS, and HFPO-DA (GenX). Supporters framed it as a safeguard after the U.S. EPA proposed, in May 2026, to roll back limits on several of those compounds. The bill headed to Governor Hochul; compliance would be required by 2029.

January 2026 — Capital Region & Westchester

Winter water-main breaks trigger boil advisories in Colonie and Greenburgh

A break in a 24-inch main near British American Boulevard put the town and village of Colonie under a boil water advisory in mid-January, days after a separate main break in the Town of Greenburgh, Westchester County, did the same. Cold-weather main breaks are a common winter cause of short-term advisories; boiling water for one minute addresses the bacterial risk from a temporary pressure loss.

EPA proposes extending PFOA/PFOS compliance deadline, moves to rescind rules for four other PFAS

On May 18, 2026, EPA proposed two changes to the 2024 national PFAS drinking water rule: an option for water systems to request until 2031 (instead of 2029) to meet the PFOA and PFOS limits, and a separate proposal to rescind the drinking water regulations for PFHxS, PFNA, HFPO-DA (GenX), and the related Hazard Index mixture limit, citing a procedural issue with how those specific standards were originally set. The PFOA and PFOS limits themselves (4.0 ppt) are not proposed to change. Public comment closes July 20, 2026, following a July 7 public hearing.
