If your primary goal is a lower hardness reading, ion exchange is the proven approach; if your priority is reducing scale buildup without adding sodium, a conditioner is worth evaluating on its own terms.

Neither option is "better" in every case — they solve slightly different problems. A household on a sodium-restricted diet, or one that simply doesn't want brine tank upkeep, may prefer a conditioner even knowing it won't change the hardness reading. A household most bothered by spotting, scale, and reduced lathering — and less concerned about sodium — typically gets more complete results from a true softener.

An undersized softener regenerates too frequently and wastes salt and water; an oversized one costs more upfront than necessary. Sizing depends on three inputs:

  • Household size: More occupants generally means more daily water usage
