Start with the problem, not the product
The most common mistake in home water treatment is buying equipment before confirming what — if anything — actually needs treating. Not every home needs a filter or softener. Use this matrix to move from a symptom or a Consumer Confidence Report (CCR) result to the questions to answer first, and only then to the treatment approaches that are commonly considered. Where a concern is health-related (such as lead or PFAS), confirm it with your CCR and, for your specific tap, a certified laboratory test before acting.

Certification matters more than category: look for products certified by a recognized body (for example, to the relevant NSF/ANSI standard) to reduce the specific contaminant you've confirmed.
What this can't tell you
This matrix is a starting point, not a diagnosis
It cannot confirm what is in your specific water, guarantee that any product will solve a given problem, or tell you that you need to buy anything. Public water in New York is regulated by the EPA and NYSDOH and must meet enforceable limits; your annual CCR is the first place to look. For a concern at your own tap — especially lead — a certified laboratory test is the reliable confirmation. Common questions
Do I need a water filter if my CCR looks clean?
Often not. A Consumer Confidence Report that shows results within regulated limits generally means the public water meets EPA and NYSDOH standards. Treatment is usually about a specific confirmed concern or a personal preference, not a requirement.
Will a water softener remove lead or PFAS?
A standard ion-exchange softener is designed to reduce hardness, not lead or PFAS. Reducing those requires equipment certified for the specific contaminant, such as a certified point-of-use lead filter or reverse-osmosis system. Confirm the certification.
How do I confirm a contaminant at my own tap?
Read your current CCR for system-wide data, then use a certified laboratory test for your specific tap when the concern is health-related (lead in particular). Your provider and NYSDOH can point you to accredited labs.
