An estimated 26% of New York adults rely on private well water, according to the NY Department of Health. If that's you, none of the Consumer Confidence Report guidance elsewhere on this site applies — wells aren't part of the regulated public water system, and there's no annual report generated on your behalf. Testing your own water, on your own schedule, is the equivalent step, and it's the single most important habit a well owner can build.

Why testing is entirely on you

New York does not regulate private water wells — there are no state-mandated standards for well construction or water quality testing. That responsibility falls entirely on the well owner. Wells can pick up contamination from natural sources (soil or rock containing arsenic or lead, nearby flooding) or from human activity (agriculture, mining, industrial spills), and because there's no requirement to test, problems can go unnoticed for years without a deliberate testing routine.

The baseline recommendation from the EPA and CDC is straightforward: test once a year for total coliform bacteria, nitrates, total dissolved solids, and pH. These four cover the most common and fastest-changing risk factors. Other contaminants — including metals like arsenic, barium, iron, and manganese — are typically tested at least once, with more frequent re-testing only if your situation changes.

Do you need additional testing right now?

Beyond the annual baseline panel, NY DOH and EPA guidance points to specific situations that call for extra testing sooner. If every item below is true for your household, additional testing likely isn't needed yet:

  • The water has no unusual taste, color, or smell
  • The well has been tested at least once since it was drilled or since you started using it
  • It was tested for total coliform bacteria, nitrates, TDS, and pH within the last 12 months
  • No one in the household is pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or using the water for infant formula
  • No recurring gastrointestinal illness (stomach aches, diarrhea) among anyone using the water
  • No flooding in the area since the last test
  • No chemical spills (such as gasoline) near the well
  • No new industrial activity nearby — farming, oil and gas development, waste processing
  • No part of the well has been repaired or replaced since it was last tested
  • If a water treatment system is installed, the water has been tested since installation

If you can't check every box, that's a signal for additional or sooner testing — not necessarily an emergency, but a reason to test rather than wait for the next annual cycle. Homes built before 1986 should also have tap water specifically tested for lead and copper, since these typically come from household plumbing rather than the well itself.

What shows up in NY well water

New York Department of Health analysis of USGS well-water studies across several NY counties found that most wells tested had contaminant levels considered safe, but some wells did exceed limits for metals such as arsenic and barium — both naturally occurring and both known health hazards even at low concentrations. Wells were more likely to exceed the less-strict "secondary" aesthetic guidelines for substances like iron and manganese, which mainly affect taste, staining, and plumbing rather than posing a direct health risk, but are still worth addressing.
